Der Film erzählt die Geschichte des post-sowjetischen Übergangs zur Marktwirtschaft anhand des Zusammenpralls der Kulturen, von Stromsperren und Stromausfällen. Er zeigt eine Umgebung, die geprägt ist von Korruption, politischen Morden und Straßenunruhen. Die ‘AES Corporation‘, ein gewaltiger nordamerikanischer Energiekonzern, hat die privatisierte Elektrizitätsgesellschaft in Tbilissi erworben. Piers Lewis arbeitet als Manager bei dem Konzern und muss der ehemals kommunistischen Bevölkerung nun beibringen, dass in dieser neuen Zeit Kunden für ihren Strom bezahlen. Aber die Georgier denken sich immer raffiniertere Methoden aus, um kostenlos an Elektrizität zu kommen – angefangen von den Stromablesern bis zum Energieminister. Unter dem Ansturm aufgebrachter Verbraucher bemüht sich Lewis, seine Zuneigung für die Georgier mit der Notlage, in die sie durch seine Firma gebracht werden, in Einklang zu bringen. „Power Trip verschafft auch Einblicke in den Lebensstil, die Kultur und die Musik der Georgier. In an environment of pervasive corruption, political assassinations, and street rioting, the story of chaotic post-Soviet transition is told through culture clash, electricity disconnections and blackouts. AES Corp., the massive Northamerican “global power company,” has purchased the privatised electricity distribution company in Tbilisi, capital of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. AES manager Piers Lewis must now teach the formerly communist populace that, in this new world, customers pay for their electricity. The Georgians meanwhile, from meter readers to the Energy Minister, devise ever more clever ways to get it for free. Amidst hot tempers and high drama, Lewis balances his love for the Georgian people with the hardships his company creates for them, as they struggle to build a nation from the rubble of Soviet collapse. “Power Trip also provides a window into the lifestyle, culture and music of the Georgian people.
